Thanks to Wisdom Publications Mindfulness Day is September 12th.  Wisdom Publications is the leading publisher of contemporary and classic Buddhist books as well as applied works on mindfulness.

Mindfulness Day was created to raise awareness about the value and benefits of mindfulness.  Another goal of this day is to educate you on how to practice mindfulness.

Meditation groups and workshops are held to help people explore mindfulness on this day.

You can enjoy this day too, even if you have never practiced mindfulness!

What is Mindfulness?

Mindfulness has been gaining in popularity in the US over the past few decades.  The Greater Good Science Center defines mindfulness as the following

“Mindfulness means maintaining a moment-by-moment awareness of our thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, and surrounding environment, through a gentle, nurturing lens.”

Mindfulness refers to the practice of being present and developing presence throughout your life.

Mindfulness is an essential element of Buddhist practice.  Over the years it has become popular in Western countries.  Today, psychologists and psychotherapists teach patients mindfulness techniques.

What is Mindful Eating?

According to The Center for Mindful Eating, mindful eating is

“allowing yourself to become aware of the positive and nurturing opportunities that are available through food selection and preparation by respecting your own inner wisdom.

Using all your senses in choosing to eat food that is both satisfying to you and nourishing to your body.

Acknowledging responses to food (likes, dislikes, or neutral) without judgment.

Becoming aware of physical hunger and satiety cues to guide your decisions to begin and end eating.”

Again, mindfulness is about being present. You can apply mindfulness techniques to any activities, including eating.

If you have never tried mindfulness, mindful eating is a great place to start.

Mindful Eating Exercise

Mindfulness eating is a popular way to learn mindfulness and increase awareness to eating.

You can try a basic mindful eating exercise by considering where food comes.

I love this idea because it applies the goal of Sherlock Hungry (demystifying what you eat) with mindfulness.

Try mindfulness with mindful eating next time you eat. Mindfulness practice can also take place while cooking.

Try this next time you eat:

  1. Look at the food you are about to eat.  What are the components of that food?
  2. Think about from where each component came.  Think of all of the possibilities for raw materials and ingredients.  Think all the way back to the farm of field.
  3. Next think of the people involved in getting your meal on your plate.  This includes you or loved ones who prepared the meal, to workers in the story who stocked the shelves, back to those who planted and harvested the raw materials.
  4. As you consider everything that went into your meal, it becomes effortless to experience and express gratitude to all of the people who gave their time and effort for the food you are eating.

Summary

Mindfulness Day can be celebrated in many ways.  One recommended way is to try the Mindfulness Eating exercise described in the post.

Did you try the exercise?  What do you think?
