Who am I?
Hi, I am Joy. I am a Food Scientist and the creator of Sherlock Hungry.
I love food! At any given time during the day, I am most likely thinking about food. Food is my passion.
I am usually trying to figure out a way to make creative and healthier meals and snacks using my Food Science background.
I taught myself to cook by watching cooking shows. I then discovered the field of Food Science while in undergrad. I knew that I found my “calling”, so I decided go to graduate school and study food science.
My Food Industry Journey
I have worked in or with Product Development on food for over 15 years. Time flies when you are having fun!
Nowadays, people ask me about my diet and food all the time. I realized there is a need for people like you to understand the food you eat.
Therefore, I decided to share my food industry knowledge. Sherlock Hungry aims to demystify the food you eat and love. #knowyourfood
So what does a Food Scientist eat?
Just like you, I have tried a number of diets and fads throughout my life. I have also seen that research indicates dieting does not work in the long run.
I no longer diet because of personal trial and error as well as published research on dieting. I eat healthy and try to maintain healthy habits.
I consider myself a flexitarian and eat mainly plant-based.
When I first started my career, I never thought about the types of ingredients I was using. Fast forward 15 years, I now think about what ingredients are used in food all the time.
I have realized that added sugars seem to be everywhere, even in foods you would not expect.
Surprise added sugar is everywhere and bacon is delicious.
Why am I not fully vegetarian or vegan? I am love bacon 🥓. Bacon is delicious!
Bacon is the reason I cannot become a long time vegan or vegetarian! I also do think meat can be included in a healthy diet when consumed in moderation.
Food through the lens of a Food Industry Expert
The vast majority of food blogs, books, articles, and food media is written by chefs, home cooks, dietitians or journalist. I seldom read the perspective from a Food Scientist.
That’s why I created Sherlock Hungry, to explain food through the lens of a Food Scientist.
I’m excited to share my perspective on all things food with you. If you have any questions or what to know more about something, please ask.

- BASc in Packaging from Clemson University
- MS in Food Science from North Carolina State University
- MBA from Duke University
- Professional Chocolatier from Ecole Chocolat
- 15+ years in the Food Industry

Last but not least, a little fun fact about me. I love chocolate, bacon, peanuts and tomatoes. Tomatoes are my #1 favorite food 🍅!
